Athena Induction Cooker January 2, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I bought this cooker as a gift. The couple I bought it for really are enjoying it. It seems to do everything thing its ad said it would!
Change to Induction NOW! December 1, 2007 12 out of 13 found this review helpful
This is a great product! I had 4 pans and pots that could hold a magnet. On the first day I used the unit, I cooked 2 stir fry vegetables dished, fried tortillas for enchiladas and boiled a large pot of water for pasta. The unit responds with power like a gas burner would. I can immediately lower the power input as I see a pot of pasta starting to overflow. Using cookware like Le Creuset gives the advantage of having a lot of heat stored in the body of the pot. After carmelizing some onions, I stirred in an eggplant that I had cubed. I cooked it for about 3 min at power level 6 so as not to burn the eggplant. When enough heat was in the eggplant, I turned off the unit and let the pot sit for about 20 min. Acutally, I forgot about it. When I opened it up everything was cooked through and no water or extra oil had been added. It ended up being a lowfat dish because I only put a little oil to sweat the onions and carmelize them. It tasted great even though I left out chopped garlic, grated ginger, a few shakes of La. hot sauce and a drizzle of soy sauce and sesame oil. I can see using this unit and not the electric coils on my 20 year stove anymore. I can cook dishes really fast on it. All the splatters hit cool surfaces so there won't be caked on, burned on food around the stove to scrub off. I even replaced my awful looking stove burner pans with new ones because they will stay clean now.
Works but problems June 1, 2007 19 out of 21 found this review helpful
The Athena 6000 Max Burton Induction Cooker is a mixed performer. The unit smelled when I first got it and continued to for a week or two after. Something in it was out gassing. Couldn't be good to breath whatever it was.
The unit had a fan, presumably to cool the electronics. It worked for a couple of weeks and no longer does so. I presume that if I used the cooker for a long time that the electronics would fail. As I use it only to cook eggs for a few minutes . . . it continues to function . . . for about a month now.
The induction part of it works fine heating an iron skillet quickly and with good control over the heat. The cooker has six heat levels . . . something that was hard to get out of the marketing info at the time I bought the unit.
I love it May 16, 2007 12 out of 12 found this review helpful
I live in a hot desert climate and on the first hot day of spring I turned on my gas stove and released a flood of heat. I decided it's finally time to buy that induction cooker!
I have a big set of stainless steel cookware, and only 1 of my pots will hold a magnet, so at least I had one pan to use while I waited for a couple more to arrive. I used the cooker immediately and noticed "no heat". It works fast. My one pot is a rather large saucepan. So I can cook spaghetti in the pan and put a double boiler accessory over it to heat the sauce at the same time. I also have a steamer accessory so I can boil spaghetti and steam brocolli. I noticed that boiling water will release steam into the room, but it still doesn't heat the room like a gas flame.
I leave the unit on the counter all the time and it looks nice. Compared to other countertop cookers, the price is almost the lowest and the power is better than similarly priced units. The only warning I have is that the 'warm' setting is what I'd call a simmer.
Love this technology! January 4, 2007 26 out of 27 found this review helpful
What a find! This lightweight cooker is quite a workhorse. It boils water faster than my professional-grade Viking, and I can control the heat as quickly and precisely as I can on a gas range. From simmer to sear, it does it all. I teach cooking to kids, so I especially like that it's safer than other cooktops--no flame, and the surface stays relatively cool (there's some heat transfer from the pot, however, so you still need to be careful). Two drawbacks: you can only use induction-compatable cookware (anything that attracts a magnet will do), and you need a very reliable power supply, because this little guy requires a lot of juice.
