easy to use product for making fast and healthy meals July 8, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I liked the sounds of an easy to use product for making fast and healthy meals so I decided to try the OXO Good Grips Salad Chopper and Bowl. For someone like me who is always on the go and hates spending a lot of time in the kitchen after a long day, this is perfect. I've been eating a lot of salad lately since I started a diet program but all the chopping of the vegetables, etc. sometimes makes for a long night preparing dinner.
With this product however, I was able to make my salad in half the time. I've only used it once or twice so far but I definitely see this chopper getting a lot of mileage in my kitchen, and not just for making traditional salads. The chopper looks like two pizza cutters put together an inch or so apart and while not sharp enough to do much damage to fingers, it slices dices and chops vegetables with little effort. It didn't work quite so well on whole hard boiled eggs however, so I see me still having to cut those up a little bit before tossing them into the mix.
The bowl is made of a sturdy plastic, neutral enough in color and design to fit in any kitchen. I do question how long the blades on the chopper would last though and if they are easy to sharpen when the time comes. I'd hate to think I hate to buy a new one every time the old one gets dull. However, that's the only drawback I see to adding the OXO Good Grips Salad Chopper and Bowl to someone's kitchen.

a quick and easy way to make chopped salads June 29, 2008 While there are many products out there to assist in making a great salad, few have as specific a purpose as the OXO salad chopper and bowl. Like most OXO products, the bowl and salad chopper are made to last, the products are sturdy, have the OXO non-slip grip and are durable enough to survive repeated uses and washing in the dishwasher.
The bowl is sturdy enough and simple enough to go from salad preparation to serving piece at the table (f it is not a formal occasion). While the chopper may not be sharp enough to get thru thick pieces or cucumber or nuts and some pre-prep of veggies is required this set does it's job of finely chopping lettuce and other veggies, cheese etc... to aide in creating a lovely chopped salad.
If you do not have a lot of cabinet/drawer space in your kitchen, this product is probably not a necessary addition to your kitchen however if you have plenty of room to add new equipment this will product is probably a good investment.
Another gadget that will collect dust in your pantry/closet... June 27, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
In theory this is a good idea, throw everything into a bowl and chop it up for an easy and true one bowl salad. In reality though it's just ok.
The bowl is made of OXO's resilient hard plastic that will give you years of performance without getting scuffed, chipped, or broken.
The cutter as you can tell looks very much like a dual wheeled pizza cutter. Of course it does have OXO's patented Good Grips handle that is very comfortable to hold and use.
So I took a bunch of different lettuces, red bell peppers, black olives, and tossed them in the bowl and started chopping. First thing I realized was that it was actually cutting the lettuce and not just mushing it up or bruising it. It also cut through the tough skin of the bell pepper pretty well. After a few seconds of moving the cutter back and forth around the bowl I had a perfectly made chopped salad.
I was pretty skeptical as to whether or not it actually worked and to my amazement it does. The only thing I will say bad about it is that it didn't speed up or do a better then just using a standard old knife.
Pros: Actually works! Gives you an awesome large bowl that can be used for other things. Everything is dishwasher safe.
Cons: It is another one of those "gadgets" that you'll need to find space for storing. Doesn't speed up or make a better chopped salad over using a plain ol knife.
A great bowl, an interesting concept, just not sure it's really needed! June 27, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I love other OXO products I've had over the years---they are so well designed and sturdy. This bowl is no exception. It's BIG--a nice thing in a bowl, so you could make a huge batch of cookies in it, or mix bread or a lot of things that sometimes flow over the edge of regular bowls. It also just has a great feel to it---solid without being heavy, nice smooth edges, etc. I would be happy to have this product just for the bowl.
However, although a salad chopper is a great idea, I don't think it's really that much better than much cheaper alternatives. I made a big salad in the bowl and then chopped it up using the chopper as instructed. The chopper looks almost exactly like a pizza cutter, but with two circular blades and a bent handle. I turned the bowl as I chopped. While of course the lettuce did get cut, I don't think it got chopped any better or more quickly than you could do with any number of kitchen implements you already have. I next tried putting some ham and cheese deli slices with the lettuce. They also got cut up, but I had to work quite a while to make sure each slice was chopped---like when you mix batter, some areas just seem to elude the chopper.
However, this is a good idea. I am not sure how it keeps the bowl from getting scraps, but I looked at the bowl hard after all my chopping and didn't see any, which was nice. The bowl would be attractive to serve a salad in, also. Overall, I liked this product. It would be a nice gift. But I think the chopper part might end up in a pile of other not that useful kind tools, and might years later confuse someone who would wonder why you needed a double pizza cutter!
Not a necessity but a nice gadget June 27, 2008 I love Oxo products. They're well designed and relatively inexpensive. Having an opportunity to try one for review is a delight. The salad chopper is not one of those can't-live-without-it gadgets, but it sure does come in handy, especially in the summer when there are mounds of fresh produce to be eaten. You can chop veggies for salads, fruit for desserts, cheese, meats, nuts... Your imagination and your chopping arm are the only things to hold you back.
This set is best for leafy items like lettuce and herbs. Harder produce such as carrots and celery will require a bit more banging and rolling, and might prove frustrating to someone who has been using a food processor to do the work the chopper does. Just remember that the chopper doesn't use electricity and so is a greener choice. Yes it takes longer. No, the results aren't as consistent. Does it taste different? It does not. And while some might say the results aren't as pretty, I'd beg to differ. I like a hand-cut look.
Honestly I don't know how often I'll use this, but I'm glad I have it because it's a nice, low-tech alternative to other kitchen tools. I can't wait to try it out on chicken salad or chopped nuts.
