Love Southern cooking! August 9, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I haven't had a copy of this book in my hands yet, but I would buy it (and I intend to) based on the title alone. My paternal ancestors all came from the Southern states, so I grew up eating a lot of southern food. I still drink Sweet Tea, but I miss Screen Doors, (and porches). I can't wait to get my copy of this book, so I can refresh my memory of foods I grew up on. (My comfort foods!)
A Winner! August 4, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
What a charming book! The recipes take me back to my childhood and my Mother and Grandmother's cooking...before we had to worry about cholesterol! Her family stories are an added bonus. Any Southern lady would love this book!
Dine in the Delta July 28, 2008 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I had the pleasure of meeting with Martha Foose at a cooking demonstration. She is a pleasure to listen to as she speaks and to watch her prepare food. The recipes are great southern dishes and the stories in this book are great reading. She is not only a great chef but a superb story teller. This is delta cooking at its best.
Charming with recipes you will actually make July 18, 2008 This cookbook is charming and has very accessible recipes. Nothing pretentious or off putting, but recipes that will appeal to most everyone. The southern charm of the author shines through every page. The mayonnaise-making competition story was wonderful. As a result I scored a 1930 Wesson Oil mayonnaise-maker on eBay, which is sitting proudly on top of my Hoosier cabinet at the ready. Very strongly recommend this cookbook.
If My House Caught Fire I Would Grab This Book! July 16, 2008 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
As an avid cook book collector - around 250 - I can honestly say this is my favorite! I usually consider myself lucky if there are 5 exceptional recipes in a book, and I'm happy to report that I have 20 recipes marked in this one. The photography and stories are a delightful bonus and just reading this book makes you feel like you've had comfort food. This book will be something to pass on to your kids, along with the happy memories of many delicious family meals.
