Satisfied December 1, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
After assembling the cooker and seasoning it per the provided instructions, I cooked two small hens, probably 3.5-4 lbs. each. Seasoned the birds with a dry rub I concocted and let them marinate in the fridge about four hours before I was ready to cook them. The cooker is easy as anything to use and is pretty much hassle-free. I am accustomed to frying chickens and turkeys in oil, so I was concerned that the birds were not getting as brown as quickly as with the conventional oil fryers. I wound up cooking the birds for two hours and they emerged as a light golden brown, with spots of darker colored "burn" marks on the wings and tops of the breasts. Once I got them in the house and on the plate, the meat nearly fell off the bone. They were extremely tender, moist and delicious. My persnickety wife raved about the meal and said it was the best chicken she's ever tasted. I thought is was good too. We're having the second bird for supper tonight. Love this unit and will recommend it to anyone who likes to cook! (and especially eat!!!)
Char-Broil Big Easy - Easy and Delicious November 28, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I ordered this over the weekend before Thanksgiving and got it the day before Thanksgiving. Craftsmanship was ok, it got slightly dinged in shipping but nothing that made it unusable. Now on to the important part, using it. They call it a turkey fryer which it isn't since there's no fat or oil involved. The results though were terrific! I've deep fried turkeys for the last year or two while they were good there was an awful lot of hassle with all the oil and prep work. With this unit all you have to do is connect your propane tank, turn on the gas, just turn it on no settings, and turn the dial for the igniter, then unpack your turkey pat it dry, put it in the basket, insert the provided thermometer and drop it in. They recommend rubbing your turkey down with a little olive oil which I did, and I rubbed it with a little kosher salt but nothing else. In approximately 2 hours for about a 15lb turkey it was done. The turkey was golden brown on the outside and very tender and juicy inside the whole family loved it. Big advantages: - No oil to buy (around here peanut oil for a fryer is up to $50.) - None of the problems with oil: Safety, clean-up, cooldown period. - Set it and forget it practically, no need to watch it every second. - Drip tray included to catch drippings to make gravy, can't do that with a deep fryer. - Easy cleanup, leave it on for a while to turn any drippings in the bottom of the cooking chamber to ash and practically brush them out, basket for the turkey is able to be put through a dishwasher.
Overall it was a fantastic way to cook a turkey, and the results were great the whole family thought the turkey was wonderfully juicy and tender.
Great new way to cook November 25, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Just got this thing a couple of weeks ago and have been very pleased thus far. We've cooked a chicken, turkey, and a prime rib roast and all of them turned out great. I do recommend however looking online for tips and tricks. While it comes with basic directions, learning from people who have used it firsthand is the way to go...the Char Broil site has some additional recipes and information as well.
Great cooking tool! November 24, 2008 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
This is a great cooking tool! It takes about 15-20 minutes to assemble (unfortunate, but I'm sure it reduces the cost to the consumer as well). The craftsmanship isn't A-grade because of sharp edges and such, but overall it is sturdy enough to seem like it will last a long time.
I wanted to test it out before Thanksgiving, so I bought a 12 lbs turkey to try it out. The turkey took about 2 hours and 15 minutes to cook, which is a little longer than their estimated time (the outside temperature was rather low at 30 degrees F).
The result? Delicious. The skin was nice and crispy, and the inside meat was extremely moist.
The fryer is easy to use, and it can be used for cooking all kinds of meats. I'm really excited to cook a bigger bird on Thursday!
for the birds! November 24, 2008 3 out of 6 found this review helpful
we cooked a defrosted room temp 12 lb turkey 3 hours on high...checking every 10 min last hour and this turkey is NOT cooked! The bones are not hot, legs still tight and WHAT A RIP OFF!!!!!!! I have to put it in the oven to cook it...good thing we tried this before Thanksgiving, or it would have been a disaster...as it is I have a useless $150 contraption that is going to the dump! Charbroil is NOT open on the weekend...convenient...I have cooked over 100 turkeys and this thing is an insult and torture to the bird and the invited guests..NO THANKS!
They don't have any directions re settings or time per pound...I got that on a review on Amazon..I can't say enough bad things about this "BIG EASY"....BIG BS is more like it! I was set to buy several as gifts and this saved me more $$$$ down the drain...the turkey has no way of being straight in the cooker and some parts are nearly burned and others raw... stick with your smokers or oil fryers till someone gets it right! It is NOT the BIG EASY...
