A wrist-saver, and great for large families December 22, 2008 Well, if you're reading this review after browsing to the Edlund #1 Commercial Can Opener (with base), then I'll assume you fall into one of two categories: you're either involved in food service somewhere (e.g., restaurant, soup kitchen) or you have a large family that uses a lot of institutional sized (10#) cans. I fall into the latter category.
This open brought to an end our practice of buying and wearing out traditional, hand-held can openers. I have no complaints--this opener can handle them all. Not being a restaurant, our biggest issue was deciding where to mount the base plate. We opted for a corner of one of our countertops in the area with the least foot traffic. Mounting the base plate required drilling holes through the countertop, then installing machine screws and nuts (provided). If we want the extra counter space (e.g., when hosting), we'll place the opener in a cabinet (it's too heavy for me to risk the drawers).
Turning the crank sure beats trying to turn those little handles on the hand-held openers we've used all these years. My wife has some joint problems, so this is a real wrist-saver for her.

This was a replacement for a 17 year old can opener. It is the same one and is used in a soup kitchen. We are hoping to have it last as long as the first one.
