Product Description Prized possessions of professional chefs, Wusthof knives are an invaluable asset of any kitchen. The 10-piece Gourmet Cutlery Set from Wusthof Includes: 3-in. Paring Knife, 4-in. Paring/Utility Knife, 5-in. Serrated Utility Knife, 8-in. Serrated Bread Knife, 6-in. Sandwich Knife, 8-in. Carving Knife, Kitchen Shears, 8-in. Cook's Knife, 9-in. Sharpening Steel, 9-Slot Oak Knife Block. Every element of this renowned cutlery contributes to its precision and ease of use. Made in Solingen, Germany, each piece comes with high-carbon stainless steel blades that are hardened to maintain a sharp edge, and riveted, high-impact composition handles.
Amazon.com Review The Gourmet series is ideal for cooks who want Wüsthof craftsmanship and quality in a moderately-priced line of knives. Like more expensive precision-forged models, Gourmet blades are made from high-carbon steel mixed with stain-resistant alloy for superior edge retention and easier re-sharpening. Blades are cut by precision lasers rather than hand, however, and are somewhat thinner than forged knives. They're then ground and polished by a computer-controlled process to ensure perfect tapering from tip to handle. Edges are later honed by hand and laser-tested for long-lasting sharpness and uniform cutting. Ultra-hygienic, slip-resistant Hostaform-C handles seamlessly encase the full tang, and are triple-riveted for extra strength. The perfect gift for the newlywed or anyone outfitting their first kitchen, this comprehensive 10-piece set contains every blade most cooks use on a regular basis. The eight-inch chef's knife is the workhorse of the bunch, handling everyday tasks from mincing garlic to chopping vegetables. The eight-inch serrated knife cuts bread; an eight-inch carving knife creates slender slices of roast meats; a six-inch utility knife cuts sandwiches or smaller pieces of meat; and the serrated five-inch knife slices tomatoes, crusty baguettes, or hard salami. Also included are a four-inch utility knife and trusty three-inch parer--another all-purpose workhorse for trimming, peeling, and dicing fruits and vegetables, plus precision tasks such as creating garnishes or de-veining shrimp. Rounding out the set are classic kitchen shears for snipping herbs or cutting open packages, a nine-inch sharpening steel, and a handsome wooden storage block. These knives are dishwasher safe, though hand washing is recommended. All Wüsthof Gourmet cutlery is made in Germany and carries a lifetime warranty against defects in materials or craftsmanship. --Mary Park

Disappointed January 24, 2008 I expected much better quality from Wustof. Very light and not a good feel.
Good knife set, great value! November 24, 2007 WE're not professional chefs (or anywhere near it), but these knifes really do the job. They're very sharp, well weighted and great value!
Surprised that Wusthof makes such a low quality set September 28, 2007 9 out of 10 found this review helpful
We just got these knives for our wedding and were so excited to be the proud new owners of a set of Wusthof knives. What a disappointment we had when we pulled them from the box. These sheet-metal knives look like they'd snap at the very sight of a raw carrot. These knives bent easily, looked cheap and were immediately returned to their box. We plan to stick with Wusthof, but are going to return these and pay the extra for a good set of Classics or Culinars. It's understandable that Wusthof (or any company) wants to provide products for entry-level buyers, and apparently this was the only way to reach this price point. But, after seeing these and reading a couple of reviews, it seems a waste of very good money for knives that don't look like they'll make it through the holidays, muchless years to come. Save your money and invest in their forged steel!
Not the "Classic" Wüsthof Knives August 26, 2007 23 out of 24 found this review helpful
After purchasing this item, I realized there are different varieties of Wüsthof knives. The "Classic" and "Grand Prix" are made from forged steel, where as the "Gourmet" series is stamped from a sheet of steel. They look more cheaply made and while I'm sure they are good knives, it's worth your money to have one amazing knife, as opposed to 10 good knives. Thankfully the seller was great about accepting my return. Also of note: the shears were left out of the shipment, likely just a fluke, but make sure you count the pieces when your package arrives! Also, the knives arrived in a 17-slot block, not the 9-slot block mentioned in the description.
Good blades, nice feel April 10, 2007 14 out of 14 found this review helpful
I was surprised at the quality of these knives for the price. I was not prepared to spend a rediculous amount of money on a knife set with a blade for every plausible occasion. This set has the perfect number of knives and each one feels natural in the hand.
Although this set comes with a sharpener, I recommend getting the Wüsthof 2904 Knife-Life knife and scissor sharpener. You will not need to sharpen these knives much, but that sharpener will make your life much easier and will renew every single pair of scissors in your house.
I also recommend, as others have, to never place these knives in the dishwasher. Also be sure to washt hem by hand and thoroughly dry them immediately after use. This will drastically increase their longevity.
If you purchase these, and I propose you do so, then get a travel roll bag for knives. This is because you will want to take them to friends' and family's homes to "show them off"!
