Combines the best of gas and electric cooktops November 29, 2008 I bought this because I was considering installing an induction cooktop to replace the electric downdraft Jennair that is in my kitchen. I was amazed at how good it is. Induction cooktops are already popular in Europe and are becoming more common here. They offer the benefits of both gas and electric in that they are easy to clean, like electric, but respond rapidly, like gas. Since the cooking utensil heats up, not the top, it is easy to clean and the pans heat up and cool down faster. This separate unit has proved a versatile addition that acts as a fifth burner and because it doesn't heat up much it can be used on my granite countertop or outside on the deck. At its present price it is also a bargain. Now if only the existing five burner induction cooktops would fall a bit in price (they are around $2000 at present) and I could find someone to cut a larger opening in my granite countertop while it is in place I could add the new cooktop.
The only downside that I can think of is that some of your pots and pans may not work on this (test with a refrigerator magnet, if it sticks they will work) but le Creuset and cast iron pans work just fine.
Like it November 11, 2008 First our electric stove broke. So we investigated induction cooktops and come up with the max burton. We used it for all our cooking needs, heating water for tea and coffee everyday... It worked very nicely. One thing to note is, after about two months, we noticed the fan in the unit would randomly turn on when we weren't even using it. This didn't seem to affect anything. I can't say anything else after this because the blender accidently fell on it (don't ask how :-) and shattered the top. We are now buying two more - one to replace the broken one, and one as an extra. These units are hard to beat considering the price and power of the unit.
The cooktop is a little noisy, but it doesn't bother us. I believe this is true for most if not all induction cooktops.
Handy device October 26, 2008 I bought this on a whim. I have photovoltaics on my roof, and thus free electricity. My range is gas, so inexpensive to cook with, but not cheaper than free. The one I first received had a cracked ceramic cooktop. Though that was disappointing, the replacement was fast and cost me nothing. It was an easy return -- put it back in the box, print a label for the post office, mail. It was less trouble to return than it would have been had I bought at the local mall. So, the cooktop. Most of my cookware is copper clad stainless that wouldn't work -- I knew this before I bought. My cast iron skillets work fine. My Fagor pressure cookers work fine (but an aluminum pressure cooker would not work). It's as fast as the gas burner would be. In a 10" skillet I can cook an egg or two in the center of the skillet before the sides ever get hot. Thus I'm not getting nearly as much heat in the kitchen as the result of cooking something small. Especially in the summer, that's desirable. Intuatively, I'd say it uses more power (and takes longer) to cook an item than the same item would take in a microwave (for those items to which both appliances would be appropriate). Also intuatively but from having experience with electric element stoves in the past, the induction cooktop is much faster and more energy efficient. Comparison to gas is a bit harder. Fast cooking things like a scrambled egg are faster than the gas would be. Longer cooking takes about the same amount of time. Gas is cheaper, unless, like me, your electricity is free, but there's less "side-stream" loss with the induction -- more of the energy is going into the food. I suspect gas would be cheaper for those paying for electricity. Finally if you have an electric element stove, this is a no-brainer. The induction is definitely faster, and it consumes less electricity to accomplish a given task. I've only had it for a couple of weeks. So far, so good.
FAST COOKING October 7, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I received my cooktop for my birthday in Sept 2008 and thought I'd wait to give a review after a month. This cooktop for 110v is FANTASTIC. I can heat water more then twice as fast as before and that's using my Le Creuset cookware. I found out that I can cook meals quicker and better. The heat distribution is great, nice and even. What I also enjoy is that you don't feel the heat from the burner so my kitchen and me didn't get hot like it normally did on those hot days and no a/c running. I made pasta sauce yesterday like I have made for years and noticed that when simmering the sauce wasn't splattering like it did on my gas range on low heat/simmer. I don't know why it didn't splatter but I enjoyed not having the cleanup mess. Worth buying don't pass it up. . . I love it.
Fantastic October 4, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This product really works great, will boil water in a pot very fast and in doing so not a lot of heat is given off; only the pot and water get hot, not the hotplate. Also has a temperature setting so you can make soup or stew boil very slowly. If you set it higher it will hold grease at the temperature you want. This "Hotplate" works better then you can believe. Absolutely instant temperature control! Having said all that, the first one I received did arrive with a broken cook top, but it was replaced without any problems or cost.
