Great while it worked December 31, 2008 The fellowes DS-1 shredder was an excellent shredder while it lasted. I experienced the same problems that other reviewers have reported, that of the machine dieing without warning. I ran the shredder for 2 years before it finally died. I would recommend this shredder but only if you plan to shred in small increments rather than letting things pile up over the week. Fellowes customer service was not that helpful in this instance. Because the shredder was past its warranty they would not even discuss the problem with me to see if it might be something that I could fix myself. I discovered others had similar problems while reading reviews on Amazon.com. Overall, I would spend the extra $50 and get a heavy duty shredder (which is what I am doing now) and not have to worry about a temperamental circuit board that may or may not handle your shredding needs.
Good for Nothing December 25, 2008 I needed an upgrade for an old strip shredder, and ordered the Fellowes DS-1. The first one worked for a week, then quit dead. The manufacturer's customer support told me to trash it, and they would send out a new one; it never worked. Fellowes told me to trash the second one, and sent me a factory reconditioned unit. After shredding about 100 sheets--when it was in a mood to work at all--it too stopped dead.
I've had it with Fellowes products...you couldn't give me one! I'm going to eat the cost and buy some other brand.
Very powerful, fast and efficient... but SO LOUD! December 15, 2008 This was definitely a great purchase. Kind of spur of the moment, but we really wanted something that was going to shred through all of the clutter and do a great job at it. This thing slices through paper like a hot knife through butter, and even does a great job with credit cards as well. We are very careful about removing any sticky residue left on paper as most shredders seem to have a problem with the sticky stuff, so we have never ran into a problem with jamming. The mesh basket is cause for a small mess, but nothing that our Dyson can't pick up in a flash. The mesh basket however was a great inventive idea as it prevents the suction of paper into the bottom of the basket and removes the need to pry the paper out when emptying the basket. The only issue we run into is that it tends to scare the crap out of the kids. It is VERY noisy and not for the person who wants a completely quiet home at all times. All in all, a great product for the price.
Pass on it December 13, 2008 This shredder lasted all of 10 minutes of continued use. After it stopped working, I let it sit over night thinking it was the thermal sensor. It wouldn't start the next morning. Returned it for a full refund.
Almost perfect November 24, 2008 This powerful, large-capacity shredder not only cross-cuts pretty impressive stacks of paper (with staples), or even credit cards... it looks pretty good, too. In a home office, especially, this is a good thing. The only knock is that the insert slot is a *tad* small. It BARELY fits regular size envelopes, and the slightly longer ones (that bills and junk mail come in) have to be fed diagonally. The unit itself doesn't need to be bigger, just the slot. Because the unit actually holds a lot of shreddings, and the dump-able basket is awesome.
