1 out of 5 stars Are you kidding me?   November 9, 2008
It is like they put this on the market without anyone even trying to make coffee with it once. It is so bad, it is almost comical. After all that work hanging it, I discoverd I have to stand there and hold the thing shut for 20 minutes while it brews. I don't know if I have ever seen such a poorly designed product.

1 out of 5 stars Worthless   June 3, 2008
Had purchased this as replacement of excellent B&D undercounter coffee maker. Problems began on second day when the 'filter' drawer slid out ever so slightly. It came out enough, however, to leak water and coffee grounds all over the counter top and running down to thte floor. Tried again the next day while watching unit - and did the same.

Do not know what options are at this point, but would NOT recommend that anyone purchse this unit !

1 out of 5 stars Quality has declined   April 14, 2008

I originally bought a Spacemaker coffee maker over 15 years ago. It was the kind with an analog clock/timer. It was recalled by B&D after a few years, and I got a free replacement with a digital clock/timer using LED's. It lasted for over 15 years. I was so pleased with the old one, that I had no qualms about buying an ODC440, when the old one finally died.

Was I ever disappointed. The quality is nowhere near what the older coffee makers were, and some of the features are poorly designed.

Like others, I discovered the hard way, that the grounds basket doesn't stay in very well. After a week of using it, I woke to a counter full of coffee, and a dead LCD display. I called B&D, and they sent me a replacement.

My wife decided to "test" the replacement coffee maker, and kept her eye on it while it brewed a pot of hot water. Sure enough, the grounds basket worked its way out. After doing some trouble shooting, I figured out what the problem seems to be. There is a spring loaded lever attached to the bottom of the grounds basket, that opens the sneak-a-cup valve when you remove the carafe. Unfortunately, the grounds basket is only held in place by a couple of small dimples that are supposed to engage some holes above the basket. The whole design of the holes/dimples thing is primitive and not very secure. Apparently with a little bit of heat and humidity, the sneak-a-cup spring provides just enough pressure to eject the grounds basket about a quarter of an inch...that's enough to shut the valve and let the grounds basket (and all your coffee) overflow on the counter.

One other item that bothers me. My old coffee maker had a water reservoir with a strong handle that made it easy to fill under the faucet and place in the coffee maker using one hand. This new model has no handle and is a nearly impossible to do one-handed.

Finally, I really don't like the LCD display. After a few mins, the display back light goes off, and unless you have bright lights on in the room, can't read the display. Also, and more importantly, the text goes right up to the edge of the window. Since the display is recessed slightly from the front of the coffee maker, I have to bend down to see if I have it set to "Auto" or "On". If you are over 5' tall you may have the same problem seeing the display.

Bottom line, I don't recommend this coffee maker at all. They need to go back to the drawing board, and resurrect their older design features that worked well.

FOLLOWUP: After 7 months, the replacement also died. I had managed to jury rig the dimple problem, by epoxying some bigger dimples...so that kept the basket in place nicely. But suddenly the other day, the display went blank, and everything shut off. No display, no heat, no nothing. It's nothing but a door stop. Don't waste your money.

1 out of 5 stars Not good   March 21, 2008

Same problems an many other folks -

1)Brew basket does not stay in place - even if pushed all the way in, when the unit heats up and expands a little, the spring on the Sneak-A-Cup feature pushes the basket out until the valve closes and the coffee overflows the basket.

2)B&D provides only half the correct amount of spacers in the package. There are four screws that mount the bracket to the cabinet, so all the different size spacers need to be provided in multiples of FOUR. Only half that number are provided.

3)Unlike the older model, the nut end of the screws protrude into the cabinet for a very unfinished and impractical appearance.

B&D service is sending me a replacement basket in hopes of solving problem #1.

1 out of 5 stars Take it back!   February 11, 2008

This new model leaks and sometimes rains coffee. The pressure of the water in the filter basket pushes the basket forward which in turn allows the coffee to pour everywhere except in the pot! Not a pretty sight at 5:30 in the morning when you expect your first cup of coffee.
