Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
New from KitchenAid, their Blade Coffee Grinder is powerful, durable, stylish and convenient. It has a 200-watt motor with a stainless steel blade to grind whole beans for the freshest taste and the richest aroma. It has a heavy-duty motor housing and bowl with a hi-impact top cover. Its sleek design provides an elegant look, and comes in four smart colors. To use, simply push down on the center top cover and your beans will grind to the consistency desired. Remove the top cover and bowl and pour your ground beans into your coffee maker. Other features include a dual interlock system that locks the top cover in place before grinding, a pulse control, and etched markings to adjust the amount of grinds to your liking.

Amazon.com Review
Coffee devotees know that an efficient grinder can be the secret to a great cup of joe. This model from KitchenAid delivers efficiency and more--from an oversized bowl to dishwasher-safe materials. Powered by a 200-watt motor, the grinder features a permanently attached stainless-steel blade that mills beans quickly and thoroughly. A generous four ounces, the brushed stainless-steel bowl is mounted to the motor housing with a clockwise turn and etched with handy reference markings. The machine turns on when you push down on the clear polycarbonate cover and off again when it's released. As a protective feature, the grinder only operates when the top is in place, so fingers are never exposed to moving blades. Solid and attractive, the grinder is also designed for frequent use and is easy to clean. Both its bowl and top cover go in the dishwasher, while the rest wipes clean with a damp cloth. --Emily Bedard

1 out of 5 stars Two broken in six months   July 1, 2008
I'm really surprised at the ratings this thing has gotten. Maybe I was just REALLY unlucky. But I had this grinder on my wish list at Christmas and somehow ended up with two. Bummer, I thought, but put one in the closet thinking I'd sell it eventually. Well, within three months the first one stopped working. You would push down on the lid and nothing happened. We took it apart and cleaned every nook and cranny, but couldn't identify the problem. So I pulled out the spare from the closet and within two months that one stopped working! Again, maybe it's just our bad luck, but given that both broke, I would never recommend buying one.

I should also add that I wasn't a big fan of the way it worked (when it did work). Like others have said, you would end up with uneven grounds - some fine and other entire beans or huge chunks. And unlike other grinders where you could tap it upside down on the counter and then flip it over without any mess, this one always seemed to result in grounds on the kitchen counter. I had to use it on a kitchen towel and shake the mess into the trash.

Didn't buy this for coffee, but it's a real help in the kitchen with herbs and spices.

5 out of 5 stars I think it's great!   February 23, 2008
I've had my Kitchenaid Blade Coffee Grinder for a couple of months. I'm not a fanatical coffee drinker, but I had coffee beans that were given to me as a gift, & when my cuisinart grinder crapped out, I was looking for a replacement. It's important to follow the directions to get the best grind. The grind also depends on the beans you're using (trial & error). I put my ground coffee in the fridge because I don't drink it very fast. In the fridge the grounds clump a little making it look like the grind was uneven when it was fine before.
When removing the grinds from the cannister, I find it easier to just flip the entire unit so that the grinds go into the clear plastic top component. From there I just pour everything into whatever I plan to use as a storage container for the fridge. (Unplug before you flip it!!!)
The top components are dishwasher safe, but I always rinse thoroughly before putting them in the dishwasher to make sure none of the grounds get stuck under the blade. Anything that's caught under there loosens up easily with a wet paper towel. Dishwashing is important to make sure the oils are thoroughly removed because no one wants rancid coffee. Don't fill above the fill line & I'm sure it will work well for you.
Again, this is not a product I use every day, so I can't speak for more frequent users, but for my purposes, I'm very happy with the product.

5 out of 5 stars Powerful. Simple. Effective.   January 22, 2008

I have had a GE and a Krups coffee grinder that did not last long. This product by KitchenAid seems very well made and based on the company's reputation, I'm sure I'll use this for years to come.

The clear plastic top fits over the spacious stainless steel grinding bay. To activate the blades, push down on the top. There are two indentions built into the cover that plunges into the unit to activate the blades. Not only is it safe, but since there are no arrows to line up, buttons to depress or wear out, it should work a long time.

It has a powerful motor that is very loud. It's not the first thing I like hearing in the morning so I make sure I grind my beans the night before. The entire unit is solid and nicely constructed. My other grinders would allow for the power cord to store within the unit but this one does not. That is very easy to overlook as I keep it right next to my coffee maker and as well, it looks very nice sitting on my kitchen cabinet. There are no grind selectors to deal with but have found it not to be needed. It's easy to pulse the beans to your favorite grind.

Overall it's powerful, simple and effective.
