Product Description Wusthof Gourmet knives are Laser Cut. This intricate manufacturing process is superior to other "cookie cutter" methods as it is more precise and leaves the knives with less distortion. The Gourmet knives use the same steel that is used in our other more expensive knives. Wusthof uses a special blend of German steel through out the whole length of the knife. The ingredients of this steel are proudly etched on each blade. Wusthof not only uses the best materials to make a fine knife, but it is also crucial that each blade is precisely tempered. This tempering allows the knife to hold its edge for an extremely long time, yet can be maintained in your home kitchen with out the need to be sent away for maintenance. Located in "The Cutlery Capital of the World", Solingen Germany, the Wusthof factory history goes back as far as 1814 when the company was listed with the Duchy of Berg. To this day, the company remains family owned. Each step is performed to exacting standards by skilled German workers aided by the most modern, computer guided equipment. It is this balance of German technology and old world hand craftsmanship that is the secret of how each W??STHOF knife is created. The Wusthof Gourmet 7piece block set includes:3-in. Paring Knife 4.5-in. Utility Knife 8-in. Bread Knife 8-in. Cook's Knife 9-in. Sharpening Steel 9 slot block
Amazon.com Review This handsome set contains just about every kitchen knife you'll ever need. It includes an 8-inch cook's knife, a 3-1/2-inch parer, an 8-inch serrated bread knife, and a 6-inch sandwich knife, which is an efficient slicer for a wide range of cutting tasks. In addition, the set comes with shears, a 9-inch steel for sharpening, and a nine-slot solid oak block for storage. A rewarding investment in cutting ease and efficiency, this collection would also make a perfect gift. Part of the Classic series, the implements in this set represent two centuries of unexcelled Wüsthof craftsmanship. The knives are hand-forged from a single piece of stainless steel for maximum strength, and their hand-polished blades are exactingly calibrated to be hard enough to resist dulling yet soft enough to take keen edges when honed or sharpened. Dishwasher-safe, the knives are also fitted with traditionally shaped, ergonomically designed handles that are triple-riveted for durability. All Wüsthof cutlery brings a guaranteed lifetime of low-maintenance cutting to its owners. --Arthur Boehm What's in the Box 3-1/2-inch parer, 8-inch bread, 6-inch sandwich, 8-inch cook's knives, 9-inch honing steel, kitchen shears, 9-slot solid oak block

Do you really need the whole set? March 20, 2007 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I know, I know, people like sets. We like things that match. It looks classy on the counter, etc. And we want to own "the best" and show it off to our friends. But after three years, I only use two of these knives consistently -- the chef's knife and the paring knife. I love the Wüstof chef's knife - for the paring knife I am indifferent. So ultimately, I probably could have saved a lot of money buying a cheap bread knife and paring knife and just buying the Chef's knife from this set. Not to mention that Forschner (Victorinox) makes an excellent, much lower-priced chef's knife that has been very highly rated (higher than this chef's knife) by Cook's Illustrated. So while I love these knives, I am a bit embarrassed that I probably bought the set more for the "show off to friends" factor than a serious analysis of what I needed in a knife set.
Pros: 1) Solid construction 2) Holds edge well 3) Feels expensive
Cons: 1) Relatively heavy and not terribly maneuverable 2) I don't need all the knives they include - do you? 3) The block only has one full-width slot, so it is difficult to add another chef's knife or larger knife to the set 4) We're paying a lot for "forged" "full-tang" construction that doesn't really mean anything to a home cook making one or two meals per day
Are they sharp? Have a bandage ready!! September 8, 2005 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I received the knives, opened the box, wife used one of the knives, sliced her finger! These are very sharp knives and they hold an edge. Haven't found one problem with them yet. Look good, fit well in hand. Got them at a great price also. Best set of knives I have ever owned.
Really Worth It June 15, 2005 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The saying, "You get what you pay for," is not always true but I have found that with kitchen items, it is usually right on, especially with knives. If you are not used to seeing the prices for higher end knives, they may shock you, especially when it is for an individual knife. With a set like this, not only do you save a lot of money over buying the pieces one at a time, but you also get a great starter set that will meet most all of your cutting needs in the kitchen.
We got our set of knives for our wedding and they have treated us well. The classic set feels great and well balanced in your hand. The handle is comfortable and I don't feel like anything is going to break as I put the knives to work.
I also use all the parts in this set. Every knife has a regular use, whether it is for cutting, chopping, slicing, paring, whatever. I use the sharpening iron regularly to keep the blades cutting well and the kitchen scissors are some of the best I've owned for a variety of tasks. The only drawback, and it is minor, is that the wooden block does not have slots for steak knives (probably since they don't come with the set).
They also are easy to clean and food doesn't seem to get too strong a hold on them.
And, probably best of all, the knives have a lifetime warranty. I know if anything happens to them, I can take them to just about any store that carries Wusthof and get a replacement without any problems.
So, without any hesitation, I really do recommend spending the extra money on a fantastic product that really will be used a lot and will last you a lifetime.
Now it cuts like a knife...But it feels so right... October 6, 2004 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
These knives are superb! I am absolutely thrilled with my purchase. I purchased this set during an Amazon "Friday Sale" combined with a kitchen items promotion and ended up paying approximately 165 dollars!
These knives are flawless (both handle and blade)in their construction and razor sharp right out of the box. They practically "sing" when you brush your thumb against the blade.
I have never used "good" knives before, so i was amazed at how effortlessly the chef's knife cut through a potato! I barely applied any pressure and the knife just did all the work. I understand that is how good knives are supposed to be, but it was still pretty awesome to experience.
Wow, better than I had hoped. October 4, 2004 I recently purchased the Wustof Classic set after much research between the various Wustof and Henkel models. In general, the Wustof's had a much nicer feel and balance to them. I also prefered the blade weight and thickness of the Wustof. I personally prefer the Classic over the Grand Prix, but it is 100% personal preference as the only real difference is the handles.
I compared the Wustof's to the Henkel's at one of the knife stores in the mall. Comparing them side-by-side was very enlightening and made my mind up that I will only buy the Wustof's from now on. I highly recomend going to one of the mall knife shops and playing with them, most have a wide selection of all of the high quality knives. For this kind of money it is the only wise way to make your decision. I would recomend purchasing from Amazon.com though, the knife stores I went to were about 25% more expensive unless they had a "sale" on a specific item, in which case it was the same price as Amazon.com.
These are one of the best knives you can get, although they are no better than the other models and makes. All knives at this level are top quality, please base your decision on preference and try them out first.
