1 out of 5 stars find another way   January 8, 2009
I recently bought this book hoping to incorporate a more vegetarian way of eating, without giving up the occassional steak, or roast chicken. The book's title and concept seemed like the answer for me, but I have to say, keep your money in your wallet, or just buy Bittman's Vegetarian Cookbook. I am a good cook, and enjoy my time in the kitchen, so I have experience in putting meals on the table. So I was a bit offended when the author decided that I needed a full page recipe for Peanut Butter Filled Celery! Yes, it seems that most of the book was written for someone who has never seen the inside of a paring knife. I wanted to be educated, but I plan to return this book and find one that respects my intelligence.

5 out of 5 stars Practical and delicious   January 7, 2009
I really liked this book. It is an easy read, giving the reader plenty of information and then getting right to many tasty recipes. This year I resolved to eat more healthy plant based foods and the author gives great ideas for how to cook those foods tastefully and simply. My husband doesn't even notice the meat missing; if he does request meat, it is easy for me to accomodate. I still haven't tried all the recipes, and can't wait to do so! Very practical-

I have also been trying to focus on getting a good balance of proteins, carbs, and fats, and with these recipes/meal plans, no matter what combination of breakfast, lunch, snacks and dinners I make, they are always balanced. The meals are easy to take along with me to work, too, and quick to prepare-great for a busy lifestyle. The author emphasizes eating less processed or unprocessed foods, which is also great. Healthy eating can be delicious!

4 out of 5 stars Yummy, Simple Recipes plus Common Sense on Weightloss   January 5, 2009
Much of the weightloss information in "Flexitarian Diet" will be familiar to those of us who've dieted in the past 5 or so years. By now, who doesn't know that we should be eating lots of produce, and moderate amounts of whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats? What this reminds me most of is a mostly vegetarian version of wave 2 of The Sonoma Diet: Trimmer Waist, Better Health in Just 10 Days!. I actually pulled out my Sonoma book to check the percentage breakdown of the various food groups, and they're nearly identical. While the advice is not new, it is sound.

All the recipes I've tried so far from this book have been delicious, even ones I was initially a bit skeptical about. They are so tasty that I don't feel like I'm being deprived (which is always a big concern with diet dishes). The ingredients are relatively easy to find- most of the stuff I could get at my local Safeway with only a few things needing to be bought at Whole Foods.

One thing to be aware of is that the recipes are written for a single portion size, so if you are cooking for a family or want leftovers you'll need to do the math to adjust.

Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Great recipes   December 16, 2008
I love this book, especially the recipes. The author incorporates everything you need to follow a healthy diet plan. I've been a "flexitarian" for years and love the variety in the recipes. The dinners are easy to put together and so far the ones I've tried taste great! Highly recommend this book.

4 out of 5 stars good but needs some editing   November 29, 2008
The book provides an easy to follow weekly diet plan. However, some editing would have been good. At the end of each week of diet recipes, the author lists a shopping list. Some items that are required for the recipes are not in the shopping list, so going over each recipe to make sure you have the items is a must. Also, some of the recipes may be off. For example, in week one, the author lists as a snack item of 100 calorie bag of microwave popcorn and 2 tbls of yeast. It should be 2 tsp. Another thing, the plan is quite similar to the one on ivillage, but with ivillage being free.
